Endangered Doughnuts

Are Krispy Kreme doughnuts leaving the planet?

I experienced my first Hot Doughnut Now at a Krispy Kreme in Miami, and in that moment knew I had at last found something that was an absolute good. There is no way that that mind-stopping, melt-in-your mouth sensation of fried dough and sugar glaze can be a bad thing. If loving you is wrong, Krispy Kreme, I don't want to be right.

But Krispy Kreme's stock has been dropping, dropping, dropping, like a stomach full of doughnuts, and it's predicted to go belly-up within the year. This 71-year old institution of good o'l American self-indulgence, based in Winstom-Salem, North Carolina is facing extinction. So this is my plea to the American people: Get out there and eat more Krispy Kreme doughnuts. For God's sake, get busy. There's not much time.

  1. That's terrible. I hate to see a company that has been around so long shut down. I've always been a fan of my local donut hole, Ridgeway Donuts, next to what used to be the Blue Ridge Mall. But since I don't live near there anymore, I will try to do my part and keep the American Dream alive--doughnut style.

  2. I didn't know they were that old. I thought they were a relatively new venture. From what I read, they overextended themselves, tried to sell their donuts in grocery stores, which is asinine because they lose all the satori-producing experience of fresh hot donuts that distinguished them from the crowd. In their own shops, they're the premium badass donut experience. In grocery stores they're just another donut.

  3. I totally agree. They aren't anything special when they're all over convenience stores and grocery stores, and they don't taste all that amazing when they're not freshly made. You really have to go to the shop to get the real Krispy Kreme doughnut. And I read an article where they said just what you're saying --they lost their mystique when they made them available everywhere.

  5. There was no doubt that Krispy Kreme was the gold standard for donuts. Unfortunately, I could never get a decent box from the grocery store. Unless you were going to use them to make bread pudding, there is nothing worse then 1-2 day old donuts. A company can suffer when they focus more on top line growth, taking their eyes off what made the bottom line profitable. Always keep your base customer happy and you'll stay in business.
