Telephone operators - the untold story
Lady telephone operators had to keep their hair short --because electricity. Or something. But as seen in this pic, short, tightly curled styles were mandatory.
When lady operators finally broke free and quit the switchboard they ran straight to the beauty parlor to get a new hairdo. This common occurrence and the interactions between hairdressers and newly emancipated telephone operators that followed led to a change in salon parlance, and is how hair stylists came to be known as "beauty operators."
The untold story?
ReplyDeleteDuring the switchboard operator era, there was no such thing as an untold story.
When it comes to todays brewhaha regarding privacy and social media I would refer those "victims" back to this method of communication.
(chuckle)
No such thing as an untold story....good one! I remember Aunt V talking about this. I bet a lot of people felt the newer telephones and private lines ruined their fun.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! Party lines. hahah...
ReplyDeleteHere it is summer and nothing on the Burl front whatsoever. The anti Burlers must be waiting for the 2018 holidays. It was the Christmas Burl forgot. It's hard to blame him though, seeing as how I just now realized this myself. That and he's dead would be another reason.
